- An apprentice is a person who is undergoing apprenticeship training.
- Any individual, who has completed 14 years of age, is physically fit, and has minimum educational qualification prescribed for a trade can undergo apprenticeship training.
- Apprenticeship training refers to a course of training in any industry or establishment. Apprenticeship training consists of basic training (theoretical instructions) and practical on-the-job training at the actual workplace.
- Although employers pay for apprenticeship training, the actual cost to the company is minimal. The program includes both classroom and on-the-job training, so apprentices will be producing for the employer while they learn. Apprenticeship improves productivity. The completion of an apprenticeship program results in highly trained professionals who contribute noticeably to the employers’ bottom line and ensure a high level of quality production.
Apprenticeship Act Trades /Courses
There are two categories of Trades defined under the Apprenticeship act 1961-
- Designated Trades: Designated Trades are those which have been notified by the Govt as a “Designated Trade.” These are mostly engineering-based and appropriate for the manufacturing sector. Courses under Designated Trades are designed by the Central Staff Training and Research Institute (CSTARI), approved by the Central Apprenticeship Council & notified by the Government as a Designated Trade. - Optional Trades: Optional trade means any trade or occupation, or any subject field of engineering, non engineering, technology, or vocational training found relevant by an employer as per their requirements, other than the Designated Trades notified under the Act. Optional trades have been introduced under the Apprentices Act, 1961 to allow employers to create their own courses/trades for providing apprenticeship training.

Apprenticeship Govt Jobs Eligibility Criteria
- Age Limit: The age limit of the Applicant should be between 15 – 24 Years.
- Education Qualification: Candidate should have passed Matric/10th, 12th class (with a minimum of 50% marks) & ITI in relevant trade.
- Aadhaar number: Apprentice must have an Aadhaar number / or a Unique Identification Number in the case of J & K and North-East candidates/apprentices.
- Medical Fitness: Candidates have to fulfill the minimum physical fitness standard/ parameters as specified in the Apprentices Act and amendments/ modifications issued from time to time. Medical examination of PwBD candidates shall be with due consideration to the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
- Apprentice must be registered on the Apprenticeship portal.
- Apprentice must have an Aadhaar number / or a Unique Identification Number in the
case of J & K and North-East candidates/apprentices.

Categories of Apprentices
- Trade Apprentice:- A person undergoing apprenticeship training in any designated trade. Designated trade is any trade/occupation / any subject field in engineering/non – engineering/ technology / any vocational course as notified by the Government.
- Graduate Apprentice:- A person who holds a degree in engineering/non-engineering and undergoing apprenticeship training in a designated trade.
- Technician Apprentice:- A person who holds a diploma in engineering / non-engineering and undergoing apprenticeship training in a designated trade.
- Technician (Vocational) Apprentice:- A person who holds a certificate in the vocational course after the completion of the secondary stage of school education is recognized by the All – India Council.

Apprentice Government Jobs Selection Procedure
- Selection for Apprenticeship training will be on the basis of a merit list prepared in respect of all the candidates who apply against the notification for a particular Division/Unit.
- The merit list will be prepared taking the average of the marks obtained by the candidates in both Matriculations (with a minimum of 50% (aggregate marks) and ITI examination giving equal weightage to both.
- In case of two candidates having the same marks, the candidate with older age shall be
preferred.
Documents Required
- 10th Pass/Matriculation certificate issued by the concerned education board as proof of date of birth.
- Class XII/Final ITI (Fitter) issued by NCVT or SCVT/Graduation/Diploma Certificate issued by respective Board/ Authority.
- Class XII marksheet issued by the concerned education board; Semester-wise/ year-wise mark sheets of ITI (Fitter) issued by NCVT or SCVT/Graduation/Diploma in Engineering
- SC/ ST/ Disability Certificate / OBC (NCL) Certificate along with “Declaration” / EWS-Income & Asset Certificate/ “Declaration For Economically Weaker Sections Candidates” if applicable.
- Any other Certificate, as specified.

- Candidate may access the apprenticeship portal and register him/ herself for an apprenticeship program in a sector/trade of his/her choice
- Search for potential employers and apprenticeship opportunities posted by them on the apprenticeship portal – https://apprenticeshipindia.org/course-search
- Send applications to potential employers for apprenticeship training
- Receive offer letters from establishments online and send his/her acceptance
- Sign the contract of apprenticeship with the establishment & commence the
apprenticeship program - Candidates can go to the “Get Started” option available on the portal and follow the instructional manual i.e. “Candidate User Manual”.
