The Kanyashree Prakalpa (Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme) in West Bengal is a government-funded program implemented in the districts of West Bengal. The Kanyashree Prakalpa aims to improve girls’ education level, prevent female feticide and empower women. The main objective of West Bengal’s Kanyashree Prakalpa program is to ensure that girls receive an education up to the age of at least 18. Eligible girls and students must submit and complete K1 and K2 forms from their respective educational institutions. Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal (DWD&SW) has designed the Kanyashree Prakalpa – a conditional cash transfer yojana to improve the status and well be of the girl child in West Bengal by incentivizing schooling of all teenage girls and delaying their marriages until the age of 18, the legal age of marriage.

Kanyashree Prakalpa seeks to improve the status and wellbeing of girls, specifically those from socio-economically disadvantaged families through Conditional Cash Transfers.
- It was also decided that the Kanyashree Prakalpa should confer more than just monetary support; it should be a means of financial inclusion and a tool of empowerment for adolescent girls. The scheme’s benefits are therefore paid directly to bank accounts in the girls’ names, leaving the decision of utilization of the money in their hands.
- Kanyashree Scheme incentivizing them to continue in education for a longer period of time, and complete secondary or higher secondary education or equivalent in technical or vocational streams, thereby giving them a better footing in both the economic and social spheres.
- Disincentivizing marriage till at least the age of 18, the legal age of marriage, thereby reducing the risks of early pregnancies, associated risks of maternal and child mortality, and other debilitating health conditions, including those of malnutrition.
- To reinforce the positive impact of increased education and delayed marriages, the Kanyashree Prakalpa also works to enhance the social power and self-esteem of girls through a targeted behavior change communication strategy.

- The ‘Kanyashree Prakalpa’ has so far helped over 70 lakh girl children in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Kanyashree Dibas – August 14.
- On the occasion of the Kanyashree Dibas, the chief minister said that her government has spent over Rs 7,000 crore on the yojana since 2013.

Scheme Objective
Protecting and empowering all adolescent girls and supporting their healthy development by creating an enabling environment for their participation and meaningful contribution to society.
- Incentivize through scholarships, the continuation of education of the girl child in Secondary and Higher Secondary classes and those undergoing vocational training or sports training.
- Reducing the incidence of dropouts, especially amongst girls from poor families.
- Discouraging early marriage of girls to ensure compliance with the legal provisions pertaining to the minimum age at marriage.
- Improving Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) by delaying the age of marriage and consequently increasing the median age of first birth
- Preventing trafficking and exploitation of the girl child.
- Eradicating undernutrition and mal-nutrition of the girl child.
Kanyashree Yojana Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must be Unmarried.
- The applicant must be a permanent resident of West Bengal state.
- The candidate should be Enrolled in class 8 to class 12 or equivalent.
- The applicant’s age must be between 13 years to 18 years.
- The applicant’s family Annual income up to Rs 1,20,000/-
- However, girls who are specially-abled (with a disability of 40% or more) or are living in a Home registered under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, or have lost both parents, may apply for Kanyashree even if their family’s income is more than Rs. 1,20,000 per year
- This scholarship is also open for various vocational, technical, and sports courses.

- Proof of age (declaration signed by Headteacher or Superintendent of J.J. Home or Birth certificate if available)
- Proof of being enrolled in the institution (declaration signed by Head of the institution or Superintendent of J.J. Home)

- Declarations (by applicant/inmate of J.J. Home or their parent/guardian) of being unmarried, family income being less than Rs 1,20,000/- (signed by appropriate authority)

- Applying for Kanyshree Prakalpa (কন্যাশ্রী প্রকল্প) is easy – all schools, colleges or institutions mentioned above with female students will have Kanyashree application forms.
- The application forms for the Annual Scholarship – also called K1, are printed on light green paper, while the One-Time Grant application forms, also called K2 are printed on light blue paper. Make sure you get the correct form.
- Fill up the application form carefully.
- You must have a bank account in your name when applying for the Scheme. This is because Kanyashrees benefits will be sent by the government DIRECTLY to your bank account. If you do not have a bank account, ask your institution’s headteacher to assist you in opening one.
- Provide necessary documents
- Applicants will submit the applications at the institutions.
