The Indian Army originated as East India Company Army, which later became the British Indian Army, and was an army of princely states before it was merged with the National Army after independence. Units and regiments of the Indian Army have a varied history and have participated in a number of wars and campaigns around the world, acquiring many battlefields and honours since independence.
