About NCL
Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) (formerly NCL Singrauli) is a major contributor to the country’s energy needs. NCL works with the aim of promoting coal, taking into account social advancement, sustainable development and ecological gradation. It is owned by a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (Minister of coal, Government of India) which has been a Mini Ratna company since 2007. NLC is an ISO 9001 (2015), ISO 14001 (2015) and ISO 45001 (2018) certified company. Its main products include coking coal, G5-G13 grade shale coal and coal waste.NCL accounts for 1.5% of the country’s total coal production. About 86% of the coal produced is transported to the electricity sector. NCL was founded in November 1985 and comprises the Singrauli Coalfields, which emerged from Central Coalfields Ltd. The company is headquartered in Singraulis, Madhya Pradesh. The Singrauli Coal Field covers an area of 2202 square kilometers. The coal area is divided into two basins. Moher Lower Basin (312 km ²) and Singrauli Main Basin (1890 km ²). Most of the Moher Lower Basin is located in Singrauli district in Madhya Pradesh and a small part in Sonebhadra District in Uttar Pradesh. NCL has total coal reserves of 100.6 billion tonnes (bt), of which 68.3 billion tonnes are in the Moher Lower Basin and 32.3 billion tonnes in the Main Basin. NCL’s coal mining activities are currently concentrated mainly in the Moher Basin with 10% of open-pit mines. The Main Basin is located in the western part of the coal district and is unexplored.
